چکیده

We propose to apply relational databases (RDB) development methodologies to the design of lexical databases (LDB), which embody conceptual and linguistic knowledge. We represent the conceptual knowledge as an ontology, and the linguistic knowledge, which depends on each language, in lexicons. Our approach is based on a single languageindependent ontology. Besides, we study some conceptual and linguistic requirements; in particular, meaning classifications in the ontology, focusing on taxonomies. We have followed a classical software development methodology for implementing lexical information systems in order to reach robust, maintainable, and integrateable RDB for storing the conceptual and linguistic knowledge.

A User-Friendly Approach to Design a Multidimensional Model from Relational Databases

Data in a data warehouse is organized in a multidimensional model. This multidimensional model helps in faster query processing and efficient OLAP operations for data analysis and decision making. In this paper, we introduce a framework which proposes design methodologies to map the relational database into a multidimensional model. The process starts with first cleaning the relational database...

Issues and Guidelines in Modeling Decomposition of Minimum Participation in Entity-Relationship Diagrams

The entity-relationship model has long been employed for conceptual modeling of databases. Methodologies and heuristics have been developed, both for effective modeling and for translating entity-relationship models into relational models. One aspect of modeling that is often overlooked in design methodologies is the use of optional versus mandatory participation (i.e., minimum participation) o...

Relational Databases Query Optimization using Hybrid Evolutionary Algorithm

Optimizing the database queries is one of hard research problems. Exhaustive search techniques like dynamic programming is suitable for queries with a few relations, but by increasing the number of relations in query, much use of memory and processing is needed, and the use of these methods is not suitable, so we have to use random and evolutionary methods. The use of evolutionary methods, beca...

Object-Relational Database Design: Can Your Application Benefit from SQL: 2003?

Traditional database design methods based on information engineering principles and data normalization do not fully apply to SQL:2003 object-relational databases. New design methodologies and tools are needed to support complex data constructs used in today’s software engineering practice. There are application domains such as spatial, geographical information systems and multimedia application...
